Are you wanting to grow your chamber's membership?
How easy is it to join?
It may be harder than you think.
Most chambers want to grow membership, yet many unintentionally add friction at the exact moment someone is ready to say yes.
Joining a chamber should feel easy, welcoming, and positive.
That first interaction sets the tone for the entire relationship.
When the process feels confusing or frustrating, it creates doubt before trust ever has a chance to form.
One of the biggest issues is complicated dues structures.
Too many tiers, employee counts, industry exceptions, and add-ons may make sense internally, but they slow people down.
Confusion leads to hesitation.
If a prospect has to stop and think too hard, they are far more likely to abandon the process altogether.
Another common problem is asking for too much information too soon. Many chambers require a long list of fields to be completed before payment is even entered.
On a mobile device, this feels especially painful.
The prospect has not yet become a member, but they are already doing work. That friction sends the wrong message at the wrong time.
Quick wins...
- Use AI. Chambers should use AI to rewrite their sales pages using proven copywriting strategies that focus on clarity, benefits, and simplicity. Run your chamber's sales page and sign-up process by an AI tool. I am betting it will be eye-opening.
- Collect payment first, then handle detailed onboarding afterward. Once someone has joined, the relationship has begun. The staff can gather additional information through a welcome call, onboarding form, or follow up email.
The burden of onboarding should sit with the chamber, not the new member. A smooth joining experience builds confidence and goodwill from day one. A frustrating one creates doubt that can linger.
